This limited number (16 maximum), intensive 4 day modular course will allow participants to develop more effective perio management protocols in general practice. It will cover all aspects of perio management, for both teeth and implants, from diagnosis and assessment to non-surgical and surgical treatments, covering along the way antimicrobial use, furcations and perio-endo lesions, using case studies and other exercises. We will discuss the new S3 Guidelines and their implementation in practice. Uniquely, implant management will be covered alongside tooth management as we have found that this is more logical than covering implants separately. There will be interactive sessions and hands on sessions each day. The course is highly interactive and participants are encouraged to bring along their own cases for group discussion.

This course will be delivered by a Specialist Periodontist and a Dental Hygienist who have worked together for 15 years and will allow you to discuss all aspects of clinical management of periodontal disease and the practical elements of day to day practice.

All instruments and materials will be provided. Participants are requested to bring loupes with them for the hands on days if they use them.

In this session we will cover hand and ultrasonic instrumentation with useful hints and tips. We will look at tip selection, different types of ultrasonic equipment and how that influences your treatment.

Aims

Day 1 - Aetiology, Diagnosis, Assesment, Managing Risk, Treatment Planning

1. To appreciate the range of periodontal and peri-implant conditions that require treatment, and those that do not.
2. To understand the principal aetiological and risk factors involved in the development of periodontal and peri-implant diseases.
3. To understand the importance of screening and assessment for periodontal and peri-implant disease in general dental practice.
4. To understand the value and limitations of periodontal probing.
5. To appreciate the range of treatment options available for periodontal and peri-implant diseases.

Day 2 - Treatment Planning and Non-Surgical Treatment Options

1. To appreciate the range of periodontal and peri-implant treatment options available and indications for each.
2. To understand the objectives of non-surgical therapy and how this relates to current practice.
3. To understand the indications for, and limitations of, antimicrobial therapy.
4. To understand the aetiology and management of perio-endo lesions.
5. To understand the options for the management of furcation lesions.

Day 3 - Beyond Non-Surgical Perio

1. Know what options are available for non-responding sites and when to refer
2. Understand the role of occlusion and the indications for splinting
3. Be aware of the options for managing soft tissue aesthetic problems
4. Know what a perio patients needs to consider and achieve prior to orthodontic treatment

Day 4 - Monitoring and Maintaining Dental Implants

1. To appreciate the different anatomy of implants compared to teeth.
2. To understand how to monitor dental implants
3. To understand dental implant maintenance.
4. To understand the difference between peri-implant health and the various disease states.

Objectives

Day 1 - Aetiology, Diagnosis, Assesment, Managing Risk, Treatment Planning

At the end of the course participants will be able to:
1. Diagnose periodontal and peri-implant diseases accurately and effectively.
2. Use BPE as a fast and effective screening tool.
3. Use periodontal probing more effectively.
4. Assess patients level of risk for periodontitis effectively.
5. To be able to deliver oral hygiene effectively.

Day 2 - Treatment Planning and Non-Surgical Treatment Options

At the end of the course participants will be able to:
1. Treatment plan periodontal and peri-implant care logically
2. Choose an appropriate treatment approach for individual patients.
3. Use antimicrobials in a rational and evidence-based way.


Day 3 - Beyond Non-Surgical Perio

Following this day delegates will:
1. Know when to refer and advise what options may be considered
2. Know when to consider referring for periodontal splinting
3. Be able to advise patients regarding soft tissue aesthetic problems
4. Prepare perio patients who are considering orthodontic treatment

Day 4 - Monitoring and Maintain Dental Implants

At the end of the course participants will be able to:
1. Be confident to diagnose Peri-implant health and disease
2. Know how to monitor dental implants
3. Be confident maintaining dental implant health.
4. Be confident treating peri-implant disease and knowing when to refer.
